This year I’m so excited to attend RWA Nationals. I will be on my very first panel entitled HEA’s for All: Keeping Your Characters with Disabilities Real
Speakers: Barbara Devlin, Sue Ward Drake, Lynette Eason, Barbara Edwards, Laurie Alice Eakes, Tracee Garner, Gina McGalliard, and Karen Rose
In this two-part workshop, RWA authors with disabilities discuss the specific challenges and details authors must know to create an authentic character who is blind, deaf, one with a mobility disability, or one with an invisible disability. Topics covered will include: physical challenges in everyday life, the impacts on emotional/mental health and sexuality, elements to include and stereotypes to avoid, assistive devices commonly used, technology/terminology/lingo that is accepted and not accepted, types of and issues with treatment, discrimination, and useful resources for authors.
